Preamble

In keeping with the commitment of the IUCr to facilitate the participation of young scientists in its Congresses, the local organizing committee (LOC) of the 24th Congress will make every effort to ensure that there will be a maximum number of student participants.

IUCr Young Scientist Award

As usual, the IUCr will support the participation of some young scientists from all countries in the world with partial financial assistance through the Young Scientist Awards. This assistance covers subsistence (food and accommodation) and part travel costs to attend the Congress. Special reduced registration fee will be offered as part of this award. Applicants should make all efforts to secure at least a part of the required funding from other sources.

Note: Students from South Africa should apply for these bursaries rather than the UNESCO supported bursaries. Students from India should apply for DST bursaries rather than the IUCr bursaries.

Eligibility criteria and guidelines:

  1. Young scientists are students or post-doctoral fellows up to the age of 35 (born on or after 1 January 1982)
  2. The young scientist applicant should have submitted an abstract as presenting author before 28 February 2017
  3. The young scientist should be registered with the IUCr World Directory of Crystallographers at http://wdc.iucr.org
  4. Bursary Application form should be submitted online through the Congress registration page and filled with information on country of work, statement of motivation and a list of publications (maximum of five between 2012-2016).
  5. A Letter of Recommendation on institutional letterhead from the applicant’s supervisor or Head of Department is needed to confirm (i) the status of the applicant (PhD student, graduate student, post-doctoral fellow, etc); (ii) evidence of availability of matching funds, ideally at least 50% of total cost, from other sources, to improve your chance of an award.
  6. Successful applicants must confirm acceptance of the award and complete payment of the registration fee at the reduced rate before 7 May 15 May 2017.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Important dates

  • Early bird registration opens 1 December 2016
  • Online abstract uploading starts 1 December 2016 (Registration is required for abstract submission. Payment is not mandatory at this first stage of registration)
  • Abstract submission deadline 28 February 2017
  • Bursary application deadline 15 March 2017
  • Bursary and abstract acceptance announcement 15 April – 30 April 2017
  • Bursary recipients must complete payment formalities before 7 May 15 May 2017.

Acceptance of Applications from International Students for IUCr Young Scientist Awards is closed.

Student Support from the South Asian Physics Foundation:

The South Asian Physics Foundation has been gracious in suggesting this funding possibility for the 24th IUCr Congress.

The South Asian Physics Foundation is pleased to announce the Professor Faheem Hussain Student Conference Program, which provides funds for South Asian physics students to attend international scientific conferences in South Asia.

The program is open to all South Asian undergraduate or graduate students in any field of physics who are currently attending university in a South Asian country. The program funds students to present a scientific paper or poster at a physics or physics-related conference in a South Asian country other than that of the student’s university or citizenship. Students from all Asian countries other than India are therefore eligible to apply.

2017 George A. Jeffrey Student Travel Award

Supported by:

PDS-logo-170215

The George A. Jeffrey Student Travel Awards were established by the Pittsburgh Diffraction Society to honor the memory of George A. Jeffrey (1915–2000), widely known for his studies of hydrogen bonds. The G.A. Jeffrey Travel Award ($1,000 USD) is intended to assist outstanding graduate students who wish to attend the triennial Congress of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr).

Applications are currently being invited, world-wide, from graduate students, in good standing, interested in attending the 24th IUCr Congress, which will be held from 21-28 August, 2017 in Hyderabad, India.

Applications due 15 June 2017 must include:

  1. A onepage letter explaining the student’s background and any special circumstances in support of the application.
  2. Letters of recommendation from the student’s mentor and from one other person familiar with the student’s crystallographic abilities and background. The mentor should state the expected date for the student’s graduation.
  3. A one-page biographical sketch of the student.
  4. Copies of any reprints, preprints or abstracts in which the student is an author.
  5. An abstract listing the student as first author, which has been submitted to the program of the 24th IUCr Congress.
  6. The student’s contact information including his/her email address and FAX number.

Award Criteria:

The important criteria used in the selection process will be the scientific excellence of the student’s research, the student’s financial need and the student’s proficiency in English, which is the official language of the Congress. The intent is to give one award to students working in the field of macromolecular crystallography, one award for work in the area of “small molecule” crystallography and one award for a student active in material science/ methods development using diffraction techniques or crystallography. The Jeffrey Award can be applied to the cost of the student’s registration fee and student housing.

The application package (Items 1-6 above) in English, should be e-mailed in PDF format, to John Rose, PhD (President Pittsburgh Diffraction Society) at jprose@uga.edu no later than 15 June 2017.

Applications and letters due: 15 June 2017
